Old Gia Định: Saigon’s Forgotten Civic Heart

A walk through Bình Thạnh’s older civic core, where the memory of Gia Định still sits in gates, local museums and Lê Văn Duyệt’s temple complex — before the route returns to everyday neighbourhood life at Chợ Bà Chiểu for a simple local food ending.
Known in Vietnamese as “Dấu xưa Gia Định”, this route looks beyond the downtown core to the pre-colonial and early modern stories that helped shape southern Vietnam.
Beyond District 1
This is not a general city highlights route. It is for guests who want to understand an older Saigon through Gia Định, local worship, civic memory and the figure of Lê Văn Duyệt.
A visible trace
The route uses real, walkable places in sequence: the Gia Định gate, the old provincial civic setting, the district traditional house and Lăng Ông. After the temple complex, the walk continues into Chợ Bà Chiểu rather than ending at the monument.
At the heart of the walk
Lê Văn Duyệt gives the walk its strongest historical and emotional line: power, loyalty, punishment, worship and the way political memory can become neighbourhood ritual. Leaving Lăng Ông for the market then brings that history back into the ordinary life of Bà Chiểu.
A fuller ending
At Chợ Bà Chiểu, the walk finishes with one local savoury dish and a glass of sâm bổ lượng. When the pacing and group suit it, we can add a nearby coffee stop afterwards — an optional final pause rather than a fixed part of the route.
